Researchers at China's Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology have developed a breakthrough artificial photosynthetic system that mimics nature's most elegant solution: turning carbon dioxide into something useful.

The team created tiny hydrogel microspheres that combine three powerful processes in one—photocatalysis, microbial CO2 fixation, and biotransformation—essentially recreating photosynthesis in miniature. Published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, this innovation offers a programmable way to valorize CO2, meaning we can now design systems to convert greenhouse gases into valuable compounds rather than letting them accumulate in our atmosphere.
